How to Get Ready for a Professional Headshot

You do not need a brand-new wardrobe or a perfect pose. A few practical choices will help you arrive calm, polished, and ready to look like yourself on your best day.

What to bring Night-before checklist

Start here

A quick check before you leave.

  • Wear a clean, well-fitting top in a solid color or subtle pattern that feels appropriate for the way you will use the portrait.
  • Arrive at least 10 minutes before your reserved time so the schedule can stay on time.
  • Clean glasses and bring a small cloth if you wear them regularly.
  • Bring a second shirt, jacket, or layer if you want options and the session allows time.
  • Skip last-minute changes that make you feel unlike yourself; comfortable confidence photographs well.

Arrive early

Plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before your reserved time. The session schedule cannot wait for missed appointments.

Dress for your use case

Pick an outfit that fits the audience for your portrait: workplace, LinkedIn, speaker bio, team page, or your own business.

Look like yourself

Use the grooming, hair, and makeup routine that helps you feel polished and recognizable, not overdone.

Night before

Make the morning feel easy.

Set out your outfit, check the event details, and put small essentials in one place. The goal is to arrive calm instead of making decisions in the car.

  • Choose your outfit and try it on for fit, comfort, wrinkles, loose threads, lint, and how the neckline frames your face.
  • Set out a second top or layer with a different color or neckline if you want the photographer to help choose between them.
  • Plan haircuts, beard trims, color, or new grooming a few days ahead instead of immediately before the session.
  • Steam or press clothing, then hang it where it will stay clean and wrinkle-free.
  • Set aside glasses, a lens cloth, simple accessories, and any small touch-up items you normally use.
  • Review the event message for your reserved time, location, parking, and check-in instructions.

Morning of

Finish your usual routine, then leave room to arrive early.

Small details such as a clean collar, settled hair, and clean glasses help. Give yourself enough time to park, check in, and arrive at least 10 minutes early.

  • Give yourself enough time for your normal hair and skincare routine without trying a new look for the first time.
  • Use makeup, if you wear it, in a way that looks like you on a good day; avoid heavy shine or products that feel uncomfortable.
  • Check collars, lapels, jewelry, lint, and stray threads in natural light before you leave.
  • Bring water and have a light meal if helpful, but avoid rushing straight from a messy task when possible.
  • If you wear glasses, clean the lenses and make sure they sit comfortably where you normally wear them.
  • Leave early enough to park, check in, and arrive at least 10 minutes before your appointment.

Small essentials

Bring options, not a full wardrobe.

One primary look plus a simple backup layer is usually plenty. Keep touch-up items together so they are easy to find before your session.

Primary shirt, blouse, dress, or jacket

Optional second top or layer

Glasses and a lens cloth, if you wear them

Simple accessories you would normally wear professionally

Hairbrush or comb, hair ties, and light touch-up products

Lint roller, tissues, or blotting papers

Event confirmation and any check-in details

Professional headshots

Details that keep the focus on you.

The best professional headshot is useful because it feels natural and current. These choices help the frame stay clear, confident, and recognizably yours.

  • Solid colors and subtle patterns usually keep attention on your face; choose something that complements your skin tone and feels professional for your work.
  • A jacket, cardigan, or second neckline can create variety without turning preparation into a full wardrobe change.
  • Keep logos, very busy graphics, and large statement accessories out of the frame unless they are intentional for your brand.
  • If you wear glasses every day, wear them in your headshot; cleaning the lenses helps reduce distractions.
  • Tell the photographer how you plan to use the image, such as a LinkedIn profile, team page, speaker bio, or business introduction.
  • Relax your shoulders, breathe, and let the photographer guide the pose. A natural expression is more useful than a forced one.

Comfort beats a forced pose.

Professional portraits work best when you feel settled in your clothing and expression. You stay in charge of what feels natural; the photographer can offer direction and adjust the pose from there.

What to expect

You do not need to know how to pose.

  • The photographer will guide your posture, hands, and expression; you do not need to know how to pose before you arrive.
  • Tell us whether you want the image to feel approachable, confident, creative, formal, or somewhere in between.
  • A real expression works better than holding a smile that feels forced.
  • If something feels uncomfortable, say so. Small adjustments often make the portrait feel much more like you.

Avoid this

Skip the last-minute changes.

Preparation should make you feel more like yourself, not less. Avoiding a few common rush decisions will help you arrive relaxed and ready.

  • Getting a dramatic haircut, color change, or skincare treatment immediately before the session.
  • Wearing clothing that pinches, pulls, or makes you keep adjusting it.
  • Choosing a look only because it photographs well if it does not feel like you.
  • Leaving glasses, lint, wrinkles, or collar details until the last minute.
  • Arriving at the appointment time instead of at least 10 minutes early.

Professional headshot questions

What should I wear for a professional headshot?

Choose a clean, well-fitting outfit that matches how you want to be seen at work. Solid colors and subtle patterns are usually a safe starting point. Bring a second option if you are deciding between two looks.

Should I wear glasses in my headshot?

If you normally wear glasses, wear them. Clean the lenses and bring a cloth. The photographer can help you make small angle adjustments if reflections are distracting.

Do I need professional hair and makeup?

No. Use the grooming and makeup routine that makes you feel polished and recognizable. The aim is not to look unlike yourself; it is to arrive confident and camera-ready.

What happens if I am late?

Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your reserved time. We cannot hold a missed appointment because the schedule needs to stay on time for everyone who signed up.
